Loosely modelled on the beloved Phnom Penh restaurant Romdeng, this superb restaurant is an extension of the vocational-training programs for at-risk Cambodians, run by local NGO M’lop Tapang. The menu features creative Cambodian cuisine targeted at a slightly upmarket clientele. There’s a kids’ play area and occasional cultural shows.

Plonk yourself down on a streetside seat here and dig into cheap and cheerful rice and noodle dishes cooked by the ladies in the little store behind. Nothing fancy – just fresh and tasty Khmer home cooking.

Cabbage Garden

Known to locals as Chom Ka Spey, this restaurant gets rave reviews for its seafood and spicy seasonings. An authentic Khmer dining experience. A sign in English on Sereypheap St points the way.

Translating as 'Eat' in Khmer, this is a great spot for a contemporary Cambodian dinner experience. All the favourites are here such as amok (baked fish dish), but there are also some healthy seafood offerings reflecting its coastal location.

Bamboo Shack

A Khmer-operated restaurant-bar that offers more Cambodian options than most other beachfront Otres restaurants. They serve up a decent amok (with tofu, fish or chicken options) and some well-priced seafood.

The Thai and Khmer dishes coming out of the kitchen here are among Serendipity Beach Rd's best. Splash out on the nium tre salmon (salmon in a mango sauce) or tuck into their Panang curry or fish amok . There's also a range of pasta and meaty options such as rib-eye steak if you're not after Asian flavours.

Curry-craving British expats rave about the food here. Selecting bespoke dishes can add up to an expensive spread, making the thalis (set meals, US$4 to $7) a particularly good deal.

On the beachfront, Shin is all about sand-between-your-toes dining while sipping a cocktail and munching on freshly prepared sushi. Later in the evening a bar atmosphere takes over – if you're up for a late-night drink in Otres, this is the place to be.

This rooftop cafe, full of hammocks and recycled furniture, dishes up creative and tasty vegan meals. Their vegie burger (made from sweet potato and black beans) is particularly good, or tuck into healthy options such as spiralized zucchini linguine. They have movie nights every Wednesday and regularly host social projects with local community involvement.

Located on the beachfront Papa Pippo brings Italian flair to Otres. Their homemade pasta is some of the best on the coast and there are plenty of regional specialities from Emelia-Romagna (where the owners hail from) on the menu.

Some of the best Italian food for miles around is created by the Italian owner and chef of Marco Polo. The pasta dishes are perfectly al dente and the thin-crust pizzas emerging from the wood-fired oven are divine.

This relaxing, NGO-run garden cafe specialises in filling Western breakfasts, baked cakes and tarts, and healthy, innovative sandwiches heavy on Mexican and Middle Eastern flavours. Sitting down for coffee here on the shady terrace is a peaceful reprieve from Sihanoukville's hustle. Income goes to sustainable development projects.

This is fine dining Otres style – right on the beach. The menu contains a good selection of steaks, pasta and burgers, but it's the Khmer specials (order in advance) of sting ray cooked on embers with fresh Kampot pepper, prawns flambéed in pastis, and crabs in two different ways that makes this place really
stand out.

So is renowned for serving up some of Serendipity's tastiest cuisine. Come for dinner when the candles come out, the menu changes and the top chef is in action. Specialities include wasabi prawns and baked scallops in wine sauce. Early diners benefit from two courses for US$5 between 5pm and 6.30pm.

As well as solid comfort food such as pasta, burgers and shepherd's pie, this funky cafe-restaurant dishes up bagels with  cream cheese, sandwiches on homemade bread and a good selection of vegie options. The menu includes two vegan desserts, both involving chocolate.
 
Mushroom Point

Mushroom Point's breakfasts are a winner featuring homemade baguettes with mango jam and homemade muesli. Later in the day their pizzas (with original topping combinations) and barbecued seafood plates get plaudits from travellers. There's an excellent wine list to boot.
